Today’s teens are smoking a more potent form of marijuana and starting use at younger ages. Marijuana changes the mental health of teens.
Weekly use of marijuana can double a teen’s risk of depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Teens who smoke marijuana when feeling depressed can become addicted to marijuana or other illicit drugs. Eight percent of depressed teens abused or became addicted to marijuana compared with only three percent of non-depressed teens. Teen girls are especially at risk. Daily use of marijuana among girls сan increase your chances of developing anxiety and depression by five times.
Marijuana can also be linked to suicidal thoughts. A study found that teenagers at age 12 to 17 who smoke marijuana weekly are three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts.
Several studies have documented marijuana’s link with symptoms of schizophrenia. Heavy users of marijuana at age 18 increased their risk of schizophrenia later in life by six times, and early use of marijuana (at age 15) increased the risk even more. Let your friends and other people know that you don’t want to use marijuana.
